Vehicle owners have the responsibility to maintain proper seat belt equipment.
While there are a few exceptions this law applies to most vehicles such as cars pick up trucks and motor homes.
Children who weigh more than 40 pounds must use a booster seat until they are 8 years old or 49 tall and the adult lap and shoulder belt fits them correctly.
According to the governors highway safety association the new law is effective august 20 2012the new law mandates booster seats for children who are at least 5 years old but younger than 8 and no taller than 4 foot 9 inches tall.




Child passengers must be restrained in an approved child safety seat until they weigh 40 pounds.
This means the shoulder belt should lie snugly across the childs shoulder and chest and not cross the neck or face and the lap belt should lie snugly across the childs upper thighs not the stomach.
Infants must ride rear facing until they reach two years of age.
Vehicles seat belt system ages 8 12 or until the seat belt fits properly on the child.




Booster seat ages 4 to 7 as long as the child has outgrown the maximum height and weight limit of the rear facing car seat set by the car seat manufacturer.
As of january 1 2020 a new washington law mandates that booster seats be used for any child under the age of 12 who is shorter than 4 feet 9 inches.
